I used to stand in front of my closet for ten minutes every morning, paralyzed by choice. Then I started repeating a handful of easy outfit formulas. Suddenly getting dressed became fast, low-stress, and I actually looked better consistently. These are the five I leaned on hardest last month.
I’m Caleb Rowan, 24, living in Chicago with a normal first-job salary. I don’t have time or money to overthink clothes every day. These five formulas use pieces from the 12-piece beginner wardrobe I wrote about earlier. They’re cheap, comfortable, and — most importantly — they get worn repeatedly.
Why Repeating Outfits Works

People notice consistency more than novelty. When your outfits look intentional and clean, you come across as more put-together. Plus, repeating saves mental energy and money.
If it looks good twice a week, it was worth buying.
Here are the five formulas I rotated through last month.
1. The Reliable Office Default
White oxford shirt (tucked) + dark navy chinos + brown leather belt + clean white canvas sneakers.
This is my Monday-to-Thursday workhorse. It looks professional enough for meetings but comfortable for commuting. On colder mornings I throw the navy crewneck sweater over it.
I wore some version of this at least 8 times last month. Never failed me.
2. The Casual Friday / Weekend Combo
Gray crewneck tee + navy overshirt (worn open) + khaki chinos + white sneakers.
Perfect for relaxed office days or grabbing coffee on Saturday. The overshirt adds structure without making it feel formal. Super breathable for Chicago’s unpredictable weather.
Worn 6 times last month. My roommate even asked where I got the overshirt.
3. The Easy Elevated Look
Light blue oxford shirt (untucked) + dark wash jeans + gray crewneck sweater + white sneakers.
Great for after-work drinks or a casual date. The blue shirt + gray sweater combo looks thoughtful but still relaxed. Jeans make it feel less “office.”
Used this 5 times. Feels like I put in effort without actually putting in effort.
4. The All-Gray Safe Play
Gray crewneck tee + gray crewneck sweater + dark navy chinos + brown belt + white sneakers.
When I’m tired and want zero decisions. All neutrals, super clean. Looks intentional because of the tonal layering.
Worn 4 times when I was running late or mentally checked out.
5. The Light Blue Power Combo
Light blue oxford + navy chinos + navy crewneck sweater + brown belt + white sneakers.
Slightly dressier than the basic white oxford version. The blue + navy combination photographs well and makes you look more awake. Great for client calls or when I wanted to feel sharp.
Used this 7 times. Probably my most repeated formula last month.
How I Kept It Fresh
Even though I repeated these, they didn’t feel boring because I varied small things:
Tucked vs untucked
Sweater on or off
Which oxford I chose
Small tweaks keep it interesting while keeping decision-making minimal.
What I Learned Repeating These
People don’t notice repetition as much as you think. They just notice you look clean.
Maintenance matters. I steamed shirts the night before and wiped my sneakers weekly. That alone makes cheap clothes look better.
Confidence boost. Having reliable formulas removed morning stress and made me feel more in control.
Budget Reality Check
All five formulas came from the same 12-piece wardrobe. Total cost to build everything? Around $350. I didn’t buy anything new last month — just rotated what I already owned.
For Guys Who Feel Stuck
If you’re overwhelmed by fashion advice, pick just two of these formulas first. Wear them for two weeks straight. You’ll quickly see what works for your body and office vibe, then expand from there.
You don’t need a new outfit every day. You need a few good ones you can trust.
These formulas helped me stop dressing for compliments and start dressing for ease. And honestly, that feels way better.
Try one this week. See how it feels to have a default instead of daily chaos. Once these become natural, you’ll wonder why you ever stressed about getting dressed.
